By working with Dr. Brandon, I was able to eliminate pain, continue to work out, and achieve goals that I thought were overly ambitious. I'd say my investment definitely paid off and I'm still reaping the benefits. The long version of my story: I started CrossFit about a year and a half ago at age 39 and have a family history of back problems. I started experiencing what I now know was nerve pain in my legs particularly while driving. What was more concerning though, was a shooting pain that went down my legs when I set the barbell down after deadlifts - that's when I went to one of Dr. Brandon's free screenings. I ended up scheduling a real appointment, during which Dr. Brandon quickly figured out what was wrong and set very concrete goals for our work together: hit my 1RM goal for deadlift and be able to do CrossFit without pain. He helped my improve my deadlift form, strengthen muscles that were weak, and we also worked on mobility. Sure enough, after 1-2 months, I hit my deadlift goal of 225lbs (2 plates) without that shooting nerve pain. I even hit 280lbs. During my continued work with Dr. Brandon, I had a setback. I tweaked my back on a rower (hip hinge motion, like deadlifts), resulting in significant sciatic nerve pain. It was bad. At its worst, I even needed help putting my shoes. I'm glad I was seeing Dr. Brandon at that time, as he reassured me that I hadn't don't any real damage (a concern for me due to family history) and gave me some exercises to do to treat that pain. Before too long, that pain resolved. I finished up my work with Dr. Brandon a couple months ago. Despite taking 3 weeks off from a strength cycle at my gym due to the birth of my son, I was able to hit my next deadlift goal of 315lbs (3 plates!) earlier this week. When another (unnamed) physical therapy practice didn't deliver for my wife, I recommended she see Dr. Brandon and she had great results from her work with him. Everyone at my gym who has worked with Dr. Brandon has had only good things to say. Less

The value of working with him is being able to work directly with a doctor for every session….that does not happen at other PT offices. After only a few training sessions with him, I could feel the strength returning. He gave me strength routines emphasizing areas that begin to deteriorate at my age….balance, shoulders, hips, knees. So he doesn’t just fix the problem, he gives you the tools to prevent other problems. Dr Brandon works with all ages and skill levels…from elite athletes to high school athletes to those of us trying to be injury proof as long as possible. Less

He’s not a guy in a white-coat who regurgitates what he learned 20 years ago in a textbook, he’s out there doing the work himself and making his patients better! He’s professional, knowledgeable, and always up to speed on the latest research, especially when it comes to getting athletes back on the court/field. Heck, he recently travelled to Paris for the 2024 Olympics with one of the athletes he works with! What really impressed me was his use of force plates and other advanced tools in his assessments. It’s not just the usual checkup—he takes a deep dive into injury risk and performance, which made a huge difference in getting my knees right (spoiler alert, my hips were the issue!) Thanks to Brandon, I'm able to keep up with high school players in our open gym runs without needing a walker the next morning!…Even as I creep up on 40 years of age. He’s my go-to referral for athletes dealing with injuries at my gym. 10/10, highly recommend! —Rod Root, Basketball & Strength Coach at Eastern Greene High School, Co-owner of Teamwork Bloomington and Teamwork Indiana Sports Performance Less

I've been running Dr. Brandon's Pain Free Bench Press Program recently and I must say, I am very impressed! In my experience, this was a very deliberately assembled program and is comprehensive in addressing various issues that may plague the shoulder, especially in regards to the bench press. Having been a nationally-competitive powerlifter for several years, I've taken numerous avenues to attempt to keep my body functioning at 100%. This program has certainly streamlined my strategy in addressing shoulder issues. Prior to starting the program, I had been having intermittent pain and discomfort in the left shoulder for months and have not experienced such pain since. Additionally, I truly feel as though running this program aided in coming back faster from a minor shoulder injury sustained during snowboarding, and this has proven invaluable given the timetable of my powerlifting meets. I can not say enough great things about Dr. Brandon, and I would highly recommend anybody reach out to him for any issues that may be hindering them from performing their best, no matter the circumstance. I attended a lifting clinic at my gym, Bloomington Fitness Club (home of CrossFit Bloomington), that Dr. Applegate offered. My ability to do some of the core barbell movements (especially lifting overhead and getting into a deep squat) had been impaired by limitations in shoulder range of motion and tight hips and ankles since I started CrossFit over 10 years ago, but I'd struggled to figure out how to deal with it. Or even fully appreciate just how significant the limitations were. Dr. Applegate's deep familiarity (including personal experience) with the core CrossFit movements and expertise and experience as a physical therapist working with a range of athletes gave him a great eye for identifying the sticking points in my movements, and he quickly put me on a path of stretching/mobility exercises that have greatly improved my range of motion and improved my lifting performance. I'm still a work in progress, to be sure (I have *decades* of poor body mechanics to overcome), but the results in a relatively short period of time have been remarkable. I highly recommend him for any serious athlete whose mobility restrictions are interfering with correct movement patterns! Less
