Life doesn’t always move in straight lines. Mine certainly hasn’t. As an unemployed veteran trying to rebuild direction, purpose, and stability, it’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind while the world sprints ahead. Walking into that gym wasn’t just about training — it was about survival. About finding somewhere the noise in my head could quiet down.Rugby, bodybuilding, military service — they built my backbone. But stepping onto those mats exposed the gaps. The areas I hadn’t yet mastered. The ego I still needed to sand down. And instead of being judged for it, I was sharpened by it.Training didn’t just test me physically. It nurtured something that had once been fuelled by anger and hardship. It made that fire productive. Controlled. Useful. It brought a level of joy and brotherhood I didn’t expect but deeply needed. There’s a moment that says everything about the standard there. In training, I once caught my best mate in a leg lock — the very one he’d taught me — and ended up breaking his leg. That’s when you realise the knowledge being passed down isn’t theory. It’s real. It works. It carries responsibility.Later, in competition, we met again in the semi-final. I wasn’t going to repeat history in front of his support — especially his adopted daughter. So I did something that says more about the culture than any medal could: I coached him. In my flat beforehand, we drilled what to do. On the day, he stayed calm, executed perfectly, and put me out. No ego. Just growth. That’s what this place builds. As someone who now coaches and supports others in their own journeys, I want to say thank you — and apologise for not writing this sooner. I was focused on becoming financially stable so I could afford the time I was being given freely. That kind of generosity is rare. And it deserves respect. If you’re in Falkirk — or anywhere within reach — and you’re looking to improve something in your life, this is where you start. The hardest step is the first one through the door. After that, you’ll realise the sacrifices you make will outweigh every doubt you carry.Your potential? Still unknown.Your future? Still yours. To Aiden and the team — well done. The future looks demanding, and demanding times build strong people. Growth is coming.Rise with B4MMA.
