I had an outstanding experience with Black River Defensive. The training was run at a unique outdoor range, which made a huge difference, far more engaging and enjoyable than a typical indoor setup. The environment allowed for dynamic, realistic drills that elevated the experience.Matthew runs a very well-structured and controlled class, with a strong emphasis on safety from the start, including clear protocols before anything begins. That focus carries throughout, creating a safe but challenging environment.The drills were excellent, especially the moving and shooting exercises, and felt practical and high-level. The instructors are current or former law enforcement professionals, which really adds to the quality and realism of the training.Overall, this was valuable training and genuinely fun. I highly recommend Black River Defensive to anyone looking to improve their skills in a safe, well-run, and engaging environment.

This was exactly what I was hoping for—and honestly more than I expected. I recently completed a private class with Matthew, and I was absolutely blown away.He was extremely professional, which I anticipated given his background in the Secret Service and the New Jersey State Police. From the very beginning, the focus was on safety and having a clear emergency plan before we even started shooting.As a newer shooter, he immediately made me feel comfortable and quickly built my confidence. The highlight for me was toward the end of the class, when I was confidently hitting a steel target at distances of up to 50 yards.This was truly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I can’t thank Black River Defensive Solutions and Matthew enough. I would have gladly paid twice the price for this class, and I’m already planning my next one
