As an orthopedic surgeon six years into practice, husband, and father of three young kids, staying healthy and fit has always been important to me, but consistency was a challenge. Before working with Mike Coval and the Physician Vitality Collective, I had tried multiple online fitness programs and coaching services. Most of them worked for a period of time, but they required a level of consistency, discipline, and ideal circumstances that simply wasn’t realistic long term. Whenever life got busy with call, surgery, family responsibilities, travel, or conferences, I found myself slipping back into old habits and losing the progress I had worked hard to achieve. What initially drew me to Mike was his message. I listened to podcasts he appeared on, followed his Instagram content, and read his book. His approach resonated with me because it wasn’t about chasing perfection, it was about building sustainable habits that fit into real life.Over the past seven-plus months, Mike has helped me develop a fitness and health plan that works with my schedule rather than against it. We built a training program around equipment I already had at home and focused on what I could consistently do rather than what looked perfect on paper. The accountability and coaching helped me stay committed even during busy stretches. The results have been significant. I lost approximately 15 pounds, improved my overall energy levels, increased my fitness and conditioning, and become stronger and more athletic. We’ve tracked objective performance measures throughout the process, including improvements in cardiovascular fitness through Cooper testing, strength benchmarks, body composition, and overall work capacity. Just as importantly, I feel healthier, more resilient, and better equipped to handle the physical demands of orthopedic surgery and daily life. One of the things I appreciated most about Mike’s coaching was his focus on sustainability. Rather than trying to overhaul everything at once, he helped me identify the highest-yield habits and build them into my routine in a way that was realistic. The program was tailored to where I actually was, not where I wished I was. That approach made all the difference.Another aspect I’ve really enjoyed is the Physician Vitality Collective community. The WhatsApp group allows physicians from different specialties and practice settings to share challenges, ask questions, exchange ideas, and support one another. It’s reassuring to realize that many of us are dealing with similar struggles, and it’s valuable to learn from colleagues who have found practical solutions. For physicians who are on the fence about investing in themselves, I would encourage them to view it as an investment in career longevity. As surgeons and physicians, our ability to care for others depends on our ability to take care of ourselves. Maintaining strength, mobility, fitness, and energy becomes increasingly important as our careers progress. For me, consistency came from creating a system that fit my life. I’m an early riser, so I made my workouts a non-negotiable part of my morning routine before anyone else in the house was awake. Mike also helped me stay on track during travel, conferences, vacations, and other disruptions by helping me adapt my training to whatever equipment and resources were available. If you’re a physician looking for a realistic, evidence-based, and sustainable approach to improving your health and performance, I highly recommend working with Mike Coval and becoming part of the Physician Vitality Collective.
