From the day of our consultation, I knew Elkin was the trainer that Holly was gonna respond to. He just read my dog like I did. He made perfect sense, lol (no pun intended) with everything he did with her. She was a tough case and I knew that going in. He was honest and upfront about what training would look like for her and what he would be able to provide for my dog. No promises of crazy "best buddy"dog friends. We were ok with that, as she is so highly reactive. By the end of our training sessions, we could walk in a 4ft wide walk path with other dogs walking by without her reacting and lunging or barking!!! I was amazed. So much so, that I was speechless. My dog has had training, for a whole year after we got her. She couldn't do any of what she's doing now. When we first picked up our 6 month old pup she was pretty reactive and skittish around just about everything but fortunately we found Elkhan and recruited his help immediately. After working with him for the last couple months she is a whole new dog, confident, much less reactive, but most importantly we also have a deeper more understanding relationship with her. This is all thanks to Elkhan, he is incredibly thoughtful and clearly passionate about dogs and the people he helps train (and he will train both of you). He really emphasizes the importance of the relationships between dog and owner and explains how to develop that, and we really saw this unfold with our dog over time. Elkhan does great job of not just fixing or correcting behaviors, but more importantly, explaining why a dog might be doing something “bad” and how to understand that behavior which leads to better results in the long run rather than short term bandaid fixes. Although he doesn’t claim to have any miracle cures, and instead gives you the path to fixing problems in a long term durable fashion, I was still shocked at the immediacy of impact that some of his instructions had. I had dogs my whole life and admittedly was a bit skeptical on getting a trainer but Elkhan impressed me on day one with his knowledge, intuition, skill and continued impressing me through our last session. If I were starting from square one again, or a friend needed help with their dog, I would call Elkhan up in a heartbeat.

I had my free consultation with Elkhan on Thursday for my cattle dog Honey who has issues with strangers and wow Elkhan demonstrated how to calm her and then explained in depth the process and why it worked and how to apply to other areas. Even from just the consultation, I was encouraged by the training approach, understanding of my dog, and kind/gentle demeanor of Elkhan. When he came to my house for the consultation, my dog was barking non stop, but in less than 10 minutes Elkhan had connected with her without even touching her and she was sound asleep next to him! I received reading material prior to the consultation and guidance to improve my understanding of my dog and help fulfill her needs as a dachshund. The consultation was about an hour long and I was very excited and could tell that my dog was going to make quick progress with Elkhan. Unfortunately I have had to delay starting training due to my own schedule and traveling a lot, but I am really looking forward to when we can start the program!

Mochi is a really high energy dog. He used to get very excited whenever he saw other dogs. He wasn't aggressive at all, but he always wanted to run over and play with them. This caused a lot of headaches for us and other dog owners. Leash walking was a nightmare too, he was constantly pulling ahead and leading the way. Our daily walks were frustrating for both of us. I tried training some basic obedience myself, but it didn't really work. When he got excited, he wouldn't pay any attention to me at all.After getting help from Elkhan, we established a new marker word and started playing search games with him every day. This helped shift Mochi's focus and energy onto the game and onto me. Once we had a good foundation, we started incorporating obedience training, like practicing U-turns and stay. We added these games and training into our daily walks, and Mochi has gradually become much calmer and trusts me a lot more. Elkhan transformed our lives AND our puppy, Otis' life! We brought home our 8 week old vizsla and knew that he would be a very busy guy, but despite having read various training books and spoken extensively to other vizsla people, read all kinds of advice online, we felt completely under water and like we couldn't meet Otis' needs. Elkhan brought so much expertise into our home as he trained Otis (and trained us, really). His understanding of Otis' needs and putting a schedule in place was a HUGELY helpful piece of his process. He also listened so well to us about what our concerns were and educated us thoroughly and with so much care that we succeed in our goals of having a very happy, and extremely well socialized dog. We feel that we have the best, happiest teen vizsla now and we couldn't have gotten there without Elkhan. At 7 months old, Otis has very good recall and frequently hikes off leash which he LOVES, the way he walks on a leash is fully loose lead, he happily hustles into his crate for naps or bedtime (we really struggled with crate time previously), and he is always being complimented on his overall training and skills. It allows us to bring him all over comfortably, from events with friends little kids, to stores, etc. I cared a lot that the experience of training and socializing Otis felt gentle and never punishing, and that's absolutely what we found with Elkhan. In fact, Otis loved Elkhan SO much he would cry when he left a training session. Highly highly recommend.

I have had an excellent experience working with Elkhan and highly recommend his services!I adopted my dog (Murray) from a local shelter in early June. While the shelter reported that he had no behavioral issues, I quickly realized that he would bark and lunge at dogs and he would tense up in their presence. His body language indicated that he was not trying to befriend other dogs- rather, he was trying to fight them. Given his highly reactive behavior (threshold of 20+ feet), walking Murray quickly became a stressful experience given my neighborhood is densely populated with pets.I met with a trainer who did not specialize in behavioral issues, but he recommended we reach out to Makes Sense Dog Training.Elkhan responded quickly, and our initial consultation was within the same week (early August). I began meeting with Elkhan on a weekly basis, and in each session he would help me better understand training techniques (e.g., how to identify, when to correct, and when to reward my dog's behavior). Behavior modification techniques in 1/1 training sessions included giving Murray treats in the presence of other dogs and walking him near dog parks to actively correct his behavior when he would react. At first we tried using a Martingale collar, but when Murray was not responding/correcting his behavior we used a prong collar. Although the prong collar significantly helped correct his behavior (decreasing his threshold to 10-15 feet), we decided a more effective and direct route of communication was the e-collar.I was hesitant to use the e-collar, but it turned out to be the perfect solution for effectively correcting Murray's behavior (started using it in December). Elkhan taught me how to use the collar and worked with Murray to correct his behavior while wearing it in one of our training sessions (using only vibrations). The collar became a very clear way to communicate which behaviors were acceptable and which were not appropriate (e.g., dog reactivity, pulling on the leash, not coming when asked). Within a week (truly no exaggeration) we saw an immense improvement in Murray's behavior. His threshold has decreased to ~5 feet, and he now looks to me for guidance and direction throughout our walks.In addition to 1/1 dog training (dog + owner) we supplemented our sessions with hikes (Murray and Elkhan were hiking, but I was not present). These hikes were an opportunity for Elkhan to focus solely on Murray's training (rather than balancing training me and Murray at the same time). They were also an opportunity for Murray to bond with Elkhan, which resulted in more effective obedience and expedited the training process.Working with Makes Sense Dog Training has been an amazing experience. It not only has helped correct my dog's behavior, but it has relieved a significant source of stress as a pet owner- thank you!

Our dog is 4 years old and set in his ways. I’ve had dogs all my life, but this is the first one I couldn’t easily train on my own, despite trying for 4 years. He wouldn’t even come when called. Elkhan took our dog for private training, and the results are amazing. I wouldn’t say he’s a totally “different” dog, but he’s still our old dog (with new tricks), now with a firm foundation in obedience. He’s not done yet, as it’s our job to continue his training, but he’s at a point where we can work with him. Kudos to Elkhan for an amazing transformation!
