I accompanied my wife to this appointment with Dr. Teresa Pinho e Melo and left deeply concerned about the care she received. The doctor’s English was very difficult to understand, and she repeatedly interrupted my wife before she could finish speaking. She also jumped to conclusions, attributing my wife’s symptoms to alcohol without first understanding the full context, then telling her to simply stop drinking because “life would be simpler.” That felt dismissive and inappropriate for a medical consultation. What concerned me most was the discussion about an EEG. My wife has a long history of epilepsy, and we wanted to determine whether a recent event could have been a seizure. The doctor discouraged an EEG because, if it showed a seizure, my wife could potentially lose her driving privileges.I found that reasoning deeply troubling. We were seeking medical advice to determine whether my wife was safe to drive, and discouraging diagnostic testing because of the potential consequences of the diagnosis seems to put avoiding those consequences ahead of patient safety. If she were to have another seizure while driving, the consequences could be catastrophic.Communication was also made more difficult because the doctor frequently addressed me instead of my wife, despite her being the patient.I understand that language barriers happen, but in my experience her English was not sufficient for a complex medical consultation. I would strongly question whether she should be seeing English-speaking patients without adequate communication support. We left without confidence in the recommendations and will be seeking a second opinion. I would not recommend this doctor.
