The children’s program was satisfactory until they brought in an unqualified instructor who exhibited unconscious racial bias, displayed favoritism towards students she has an outside of class relationship with, and isn’t able to maintain order in the 5 - 12 year age group I’ve seen her lead. This biased behavior was exhibited towards multiple black children. I observed a young, female student feel a need to defend herself from unfair treatment by this instructor, which is unacceptable. Children should not have to be exposed to such toxicity. When I mentioned her doing the same towards our student, the business owners responded defensively, didn’t follow through on their agreement to discuss the issue, and cancelled the child’s membership.
That’s one of the worst business practices I’ve ever observed and not indicative of the respect and integrity they purport to embody and teach. Accepting feedback is a necessary life and business skill. I have to give a grade of F on that at this time. And to add insult to injury, they continue to use our student’s photos and videos on their social media accounts! It’s pretty ironic that lessons in an Afro-Brazilian martial art form that was developed in resistance to racialized oppression is being used as a tool to racially discriminate, and there’s no resistance to that.
