Jonathan injured my arm. On Thursday August 1st, 2024, like I had done for years many times before, I went to movement restoration for a 30 minute sports massage. Because of a schedule conflict, I made an appointment with a therapist I had never worked with before, Jonathan Lawrence.Similar to the previous weeks, I scheduled this massage due to tight trapezious muscle, tension between my shoulder blades and due to having a difficult time turning my neck to the right and being able to check my blind spot. I informed Jonathan of this.As well as a few other things during the massage that also did not make sense, Jonathan stretched my right arm overhead, would hold it, pressed into my armpit, stretched my arm a little further, held it, massaged my nerves and stretched me further, stretching me beyond normal range of shoulder flexion and while simultaneously manually massaging my nerves. This was very uncomfortable and felt as though my arm was being pulled out of the socket. As soon as the massage was over, my right arm was numb, heavy, painful and I couldn't move it. I immediately notified Jonathan of this. He had me lay back on the table and he said “oh, that is your brachial plexus”. He rubbed on the front of my neck as well as stretched my arm painfully overhead again, and said, “wow, you have really tightened up”. After driving home, I immediately called movement restoration and spoke with the owner, Trish. I explained what happened in the session as well as my symptoms. She was adamant this was a “normal body response” and assured me I did not need to go to a doctor. She also explained to me a few stretches including the doorway stretch that I should do which were very painful. The day after the massage, Friday, August 2nd, I went back to movement restoration and showed Denise well as the receptionist the lack of active motion in my right arm. Before I even said anything about what happened, they asked if Jonathan did this and they both told me it was NOT normal and I should see a doctor right away. Denise told me Trish was saying this is a normal body response because she didn’t want to be liable.Despite Trish advising against it, I had imaging done on my arm and went to an orthopedic surgeon on August 6th. He diagnosed me with rotator cuff impingement tendinitis, axillary neuropraxia and sensory palsy to the axillary nerve due to an overhead stretch, manipulation and axillary manual massage. After going to the doctor and receiving a diagnosis, I went back to movement restoration and gave Trish the document from the doctor explaining the injury, the diagnosis and maneuver that caused the injury. The doctor was very clear the extreme overhead stretch maneuver should never be done.Trish still tried to convince me my numb, painful arm was normal. I asked her if she would be submitting an insurance claim and she let me know she would not be submitting a claim and that they would not be taking responsibility for injuring my arm.My arm has now been painful and numb since August 1st, 2024. I have been on pain medication and have been going to physical therapy 1-2 times a week for 7, almost 8 months. My arm is still numb and painful because of the maneuver Jonathan performed on my arm.
