I would highly recommend Dr. Ryan Kalkbrenner and would like to share my experience so that others may benefit, as well. In February, I injured my hip after a series of events while CrossFitting, playing soccer, running, and going skiing. I initially was experiencing significant pain and a loss in strength, unable to even make a simple pass in soccer. Significantly decreased range of motion and pain in my hip was preventing me from performing fairly simple exercises in the gym, like air squats and lunges. I was about 3 weeks from participating in the CrossFit Open and about 5 weeks from running my second full marathon. These were goals that I had been training for and really looking forward to. I did not want to seek medical advice, as I was concerned that a doctor was going to tell me that I should give my hip full rest and that I would not be able to participate in the Open and my marathon. I decided to rest my hip myself, and when it started to feel a bit better, I started to add in some physical activity slowly. I was hopeful that I would be able to participate in the Open and the marathon with this plan. Although my pain had gotten better and strength was coming back to my hip, I started to really worry when the pain still wasn't "better enough" the week of the Open. I decided to attend the first Open workout and planned to just "take it easy" and "see how it goes". That night, Dr. Ryan was at the gym and offering free screenings. After only about 10 minutes of assessing my symptoms and working with my hip, I was able to perform a few squats with no pain for the first time in weeks. Even better than that, Dr. Ryan listened to my fitness goals and DID NOT tell me that I would have to skip the Open and the marathon! I knew immediately that I needed to work with him. I met with Ryan the next week for an assessment and began a course of 10 physical therapy sessions. Ryan came up with a plan to help me train around my pain. I continued running and CrossFitting through my rehabilitation without pain, based on Ryan's weekly recommendations. My pain continued to decrease, my strength began to return, and I was able to participate in all 3 CrossFit Open workouts AND run my full marathon! Throughout this process, Ryan continued to listen to my future fitness goals and helped me learn how to achieve those goals and prevent future injury. It has been about 2 weeks since my last PT session. I am now able to achieve full range of motion in my hip with essentially no pain. I continue to complete physical therapy exercises based on the maintenance plan that Ryan provided me with in order to continue to strengthen my hip, prevent future injury, and achieve my general fitness goals.
