Brett Truter has been a terrific instructor (and also teaches guitar) and took my kiddo from never playing drums to doing very well with some difficult songs in just a matter of months! e.g. Paramore, Blink 182, Wolfmother. He mixes theory and playing songs in a way that keeps things fun, and always has a great, positive attitude! I'm a hobby drummer myself and I sit in on every one of my kiddo's lessons, to know what should be practiced at home. Not only does he not mind at all, I've witnessed his teaching first hand. I have no hesitations in recommending him as a great teacher! They have 2 e-drum kits at the studio, with headphones + laptop, which make for a good learning environment.- We're also taking piano lessons with Merrilee and she really knows her stuff! She has a great attitude towards teaching, keeping it light-hearted and fun, while focussing on all the right things that a student should know. Emphasis is put on learning songs, which is what keeps a student most interested & engaged, but she doesn't shy away from theory and technique. Her preference seems to be Royal Conservatory but she has been adaptable when working with my kiddo on other books that aren't classical music.- The CMA has really streamlined the administrative side of things: booking, rescheduling, and they have a *great* policy for re-booking so you don't lose money if you can't attend. New students can jump between instructors until you find a good fit. It's very easy to communicate with the staff about any questions, booking issues, etc. They have a really solid family team managing the whole operation.- Recitals! My kids haven't been interested in performing at the recitals (3 in a year), but we've attended to watch & support other students. The immense positivity between all teachers and students is very evident! Carol and Joe do a great job putting on these BIG events, which are so enjoyable and inspiring. I actually discussed this with them prior to registering, and they were accommodating right from the start - reassuring that they encounter this type of situation often with young children, and made me feel confident that they would do their best to help my daughter feel more comfortable, and said that if it didn't work out there were no commitments. Thankfully it has been going really well - her instructor Hayden has been really patient and understanding, and is good at interpreting her comfort level and adapting the lessons accordingly. My daughter is starting to get more comfortable and has really been enjoying seeing her own progress, even in this short window of time. A guitar player myself, I can also see that Hayden is a good instructor, and explains the important core concepts in a way that makes it accessible and interesting for a young child.
