Blue Ridge Paddling

Four friends and I rafted with BRP last Friday, and from start to finish our experience was fantastic. When we arrived we were greeted by the friendly staff, who informed us our adventure was guaranteed to be "epic." It had been a very rainy past few weeks, and the Nolichucky was flowing at almost the highest allowed rate for commercial river running. The adventure lived up to this guarantee—and then some. Though the riverbanks were battered severely by Helene, the debris has been largely cleaned up (an incredible feat), and the gorge itself is just as majestic as it's always been. There is no development apart from a few campsites, so as you float through the gorge, you really feel like you're deep in the wilderness. And then there's the whitewater! When we floated, the rapids topped out at Class 3+ and even some Class 4s, so it was an adrenaline-filled ride from start to finish. In one of the calmer sections, we were able to jump out and swim for a few minutes. In addition to our amazing guide in our raft, Willard, we were accompanied by two other staff members in individual kayaks. This meant they could scope out the rapids in advance and provide immediate feedback to the guides in the rafts, take pictures, and, if necessary, provide safety backup. Considering there were only three other boats running from BRP that morning, that meant there were a total of 5 staff on the river for 9 people. I'm pretty sure none of the other outfitters that day had even one other staffer in a kayak, much less two. This really reaffirmed the company's dedication to safety and fun. (Then again, I got the impression the two staff members on kayaks love paddling so much they were more than happy to be on the river.)Once the trip was over, we relaxed at the comfy homebase/lodge to have a beer and look at photos from our trip, then took a detour into the cool little town of Erwin for a great lunch. An epic day indeed!
