I stoped into Athens BJJ while on a work trip. Can't say enough good things about Athens Jiu Jitsu. Ben, Jamie, and all the staff were very welcoming and the people I rolled with couldn't have been nicer. This truly felt like a home away from home. I am happy to see Athens Jiu Jitsu is a veteran owned business. Jiu Jitsu gyms used to be only accessible in very populated areas far from where I live. I am glad that the sport is growing. It is not only a great form of exercise, but it teaches important lessons to students of all ages about hard work and discipline. The owner Ben is welcoming and will answer all of the questions you will have as a beginner. Less

Was my home gym for many years, fought amateur and professional MMA under its name 7 times. I have been banned, as well as several of my good friends, for possessing political opinions that are shared by the majority of Gen Z today. Opinions shared by many members of that gym, presently not banned, but far less vocal and associative, young, old, inbetween. These views are described as ne*-**zi, or white supr***cist, but this is not the case. I am simply an American Nationalist. My views are shared, and echo in mainstream media, on social media, podcasts, all of it, by many. I met all of these good friends here at Athens TN, as I transplanted here following my marine corps service('15-'19). My children have grown up on these mats, from day one to their first steps, in the case of my second. I intended for them to train here forever as they now approach training age, (3 and 5) but that shan't be the case now, as I am unwelcome. I truly believe that if we discussed these things at length, there would be far more agreement than disagreement, but I feel that ship has sailed. Perhaps not. I am always open to talk. Brave Men Dare to stand for their beliefs, for the truth, even in the face ridicule, persecution, and, at worst, ostracization. I fear none of it. Come whatever may. The current owner gave me an inhaler on my first day training, I returned the favor as a form of breaking contact. Good bye, man. I am not mad, disappointed, or inbetween. Wholly indifferent, and numb, to be honest. I just think differently, that's all. Semper Fidelis, devil dog. I shall always be that, ever faithful, to my nation, and to my people. I cannot serve two masters, and once you know the truth, there is no going back. Goodbye, AJJ. Insane to think of all those conversations regarding national events of the past 4 years, and the media manipulation, and the buzzwords, and the congruence of our opinions on such subjects, only to see you all heel. Immediately. Lol. I guess I should've known when I walked in an all your smiles turned to frowns. At least your kids ran to me, I taught them a handstand before we talked. Take my business card down, that we may have no further association. Sorry it ended as such. Sorry to low star you, exactly as you said you're sorry to ban me. No hate, not for any of you there. Sad, numb, idk. Wake up. Ave AmericaI am certain you will respond by saying Brave Men Dare to stand against racism or ideologies that are exclusive, or a quip about supremacy, it is ok. I prefer that to the AI.Ultimately, a good gym for family and children. Decent in comp, a few hitters at all belt levels, a few improperly belted blues and purples. Excellent array black belts with varying styles. Decent amount of women students, for the ladies looking for self defense. Need a more takedown focused program. Good luck to you all, and God Bless, regardless of your race, creed, or politics. With love, apathy and confusion, idk..-Thomas Less

It pains me to write this review, because even now I still consider many here my friend. I trained here for 5 years. This was my family. This is where I received my purple belt, and also where I planned to receive my black belt one day. I'm a Navy veteran. I try to be a good Christian man. I also have no criminal record and never even been in handcuffs before. I served this community as a job coach for 2 years and now as an Employment specialist that gives adults with special needs a job, and serves them with everything they need afterwards. I taught classes here and there for this gym, and also co-taught a competition class here for months. I attended events and spent time with people and their families here outside of training. I have most people at this gym on social media and their personal phone numbers. I believe that regardless of your background or political views that we should all be able to train martial arts together and leave all of that outside the gym. I have been vilified for believing that, and kicked out of the gym simply for training with a man who has different views and a different way of life. I was told multiple times that it didn't matter who i trained with. Then, I was kicked randomly through a text one day. 5 years of my life at this gym, and I couldn't even be looked in the eyes and given a chance to explain myself or to talk about it even though I asked for that exact thing. All over simply training with a person who has different views and values. Less
Can’t speak higher of the ownership, their values, and care. Wonderful home gym for individuals and families.

You missed the whole point and didn't address the fact you had a kid trying to force themselves on my child and you guys did nothing. Even when I called to complain about it, you blew it off as, " oh one of the girls is very affectionate but she means no harm" when my child was adamantly upset about it. She was telling this kid no over and over again and none of your staff was even aware. My wife was there and witnessed all of it. It has NOTHING to do with the with the instructors keeping the boys from hurting the girls since THEY NEVER INTERACTED. They basically sent the girls to just "play" by themselves and did nothing with them At all! **Took my girls to the trial classes for one week only. Instructors paid next to zero attention to the girls and focused on the boys even though they had their own instructors. My oldest daughter the second day had a girl try to force her to kiss her and the instructors were completely oblivious to it because they just let them run around all class why BOTH instructors taught the boys side and completely ignored the girls.(And NO this wasn't some playful thing my daughter was adamantly saying no over and over and having to hold this girl back!) Thankfully my daughter was able to stop this but we will never be bringing them back here. I can't imagine if I was a parent that dropped my kid off there and this or worse could have happened to them because they weren't paying attention. Less

They’ll boot you if you don’t agree with literally all of their politics. Pretty insane tbh. No place for that sort of gatekeeping in our art.

NOTE: I was not payed, instigated, or forced to write this review or anything of what I wrote by an person. This review is my true personnel opinion and experience at this property. I visited Athens Jiu Jitsu in TN today at their open mat as it was harmonious with my schedule. I am at the time of submitting this review a competitive Yonkyu (Blue belt) in Kodokan Judo and a blue belt in Jiu Jitsu. I live rolled with 4 gentlemen today at the training center and it was a wonderful experience! Respectful attitude towards me AND THEMSELVES! From the little time I was there (1hr~) I observed a clean organized dojo, they even had an O-zone machine (search it up for information) the owner said was used around every other day, good variety of students and instructors. Regarding techniques and safety: they* were controlled with their movements and did not "crank" joint submissions. Much less filled by Ego compared to similar "BJJ gyms". Regarding level of skill being taught and used at Athens jiu jitsu TN: From my only competitive blue belt skill there is only so much I can say but I will provide what is true and useful: the "Professors" (Black belts+) were humble, and upfront. I had the pleasure of live rolling against one of their black belts. I definitely gained quite a lot of good experience rolling with him, thinking methodically, acting and reacting to each others attacks and defenses in a new environment against someone I've never gone against before. From what the owner explained to me they have had this location for 7 years, it looks to be developing well and has a good structure as an environment and dojo. If I was able to go to some of their actual classes and see the rest of how they operate and more of their community I would definitely have more to say, although I was visiting the area. Everyone has their own opinion on what a five-star establishment would be to them, I not super rough but I do think to have a five star rating would need a few more things that would level up this place, however it may not be what the owner and majority of the community is interested in: Be very attentive to how the training center is set up, to optimize the efficiency of the training and effectiveness. for example: adjust the length of the live rounds, when I was there each round was 5 minutes, maybe a shorter time like 3 minutes or 4 would be more effective to condition each students mind to adjust faster and have multiple rounds with different people each time. adjust how things are taught, the wording, take downs vs throws, little things will have a huge impact, the philosophy, how the straining center is led, etc. I would absolutely train there again. it was a free training as I was visiting for the first time. Thank you guys for the rolls, you all helped me tremendously improve my techniques and martial arts in general. - Dax J * the gentlemen I live rolled with. Less
