I attended the “Advanced/Masters” sedation course in Chicago expecting an interactive, simulation-based program geared toward providers performing deep sedation. The course description mentioned “situations/scenarios” and encouraged participants to bring their staff. I also confirmed beforehand that, as an oral surgeon, I would benefit from attending. In reality, much of the course was combined with the basic sedation course and focused on introductory oral sedation material for general dentists. It was largely lecture-based pharmacology and basic science review, with very little practical simulation or team-based training involving staff.Given the high tuition, I expected significantly more value. I was also surprised that attendees who had only paid for the first, basic portion of the course were invited to stay for the “advanced” section as well.More concerning, several statements made during the course seemed inaccurate. Finally, the speaker made multiple disparaging comments about oral surgeons, including stating that “oral surgeons are idiots” in response to a participant’s question. Regardless of specialty differences, that is completely inappropriate and unprofessional in a continuing education course.
