Pros • Functional medicine can be valuable. The doctors covered by insurance typically do not understand how nutrition impacts health, nor do they understand that the body can fail to digest or absorb nutrients well even if a person is eating the right things • The gut has a large impact on health from digestion to the immune (including inflammation) and neurological systems. Research on this is advancing steadily, but it does not seem to be part of MD training yet. • We learned about primitive reflexes here. Improving reflex integration through occupational therapy did improve several symptoms. • This doctor is more open-minded than many: she believes in PANS and understands potential impacts of mold exposure and untreated parasitic infections (although I can’t say whether treatment here was successful). Cons • Does not take insurance. This is pretty standard for functional medicine. However, you will be expected to pay large amounts (thousands) in advance on faith that your money will be used properly and that the process will be beneficial. My suggestion is to pay as you go and only pay for testing kits in advance. Also costs of supplements are not included in the program you pay up front. • Not for kids o You will be told that your child will have bloodwork done at appointment 1. You will be told the child needs to fast. Our child formed an initial negative impression of this doctor and practice because she was hungry, moody and carsick when we arrived. Then it turned out the bloodwork we already had done through pediatrician was adequate and the fasting was unnecessary, but the doctor had not reviewed any of the materials I sent in advance through the online portal I was told to sign up for and join. o Follow-up appointments are short: only 15 minutes. It can be difficult to update the doctor, get a child to cooperate with muscle testing, and discuss next steps in only 15 minutes. If appointments are this short, there is little opportunity to build trust or rapport with the child. o We were prescribed six supplements with some to be taken multiple times a day. Only one was chewable. The “swallow” capsules were the size of adult vitamins. Putting the powders into other food/drinks always changed the taste of the other foods. Very difficult to get a child to follow protocol. o No other supplement suggestions were available. I was just told to hide it in juice, which was impossible. I ended up pouring powder from large pills into smaller ones to try to complete the recommended vitamin program. Time consuming and results in Lots of pills for child under 10 to swallow. • Not for PANS. o There are a few excellent PANS doctors in Iowa who have successfully healed children. They take insurance. They know the symptoms. And they are patient, supportive and understanding of parents and how hard PANS is on families. Find support on the Iowa PANS facebook group. This doctor claims to know PANS but did not recognize symptoms or realize that we would miss out on free IVIG treatment if not diagnosed within the first six months. Instead of offering support when we were diagnosed, she blames me for not requesting PANS testing at our first appointment. I trusted her to be the care provider and recognize and treat the condition, if necessary, since I had heard about PANS only a couple weeks earlier. We paid IA Functional Health so I could be mother and not have to be the doctor, too. o We were not able to get our oppositional OCD daughter to take all supplements regularly within the first six months. It was unclear how to proceed going forward or what was expected for us to continue. We were contacted multiple times by new secretaries (which implies we were still patients). I tried to explain that our daughter had been diagnosed with PANS and was uncooperative and flaring (again) from illness. I asked for more time. It seems this did not get adequately explained to the doctor. She did not call us herself to express concern or discuss how the diagnosis affected the treatment through her clinic. I did not think it would. As discussed with the secretary, we continued to try to get my daughter to take the supplements. We were terminated without our knowledge as uncompliant patients (who paid all bills prior to care, remember). The funds we had not used were forfeited at an undisclosed date. The doctor says all was spent during our previous appointments that went over 15 minutes and to phone calls. We were not informed during the appointments or phone calls that extra chargers were accruing. • This business does not understand Flex funding and makes excuses for poor communication. I asked for an itemized list of how our money was spent so we could prove we spent the money on health-related care and claim our health flex funds. Had to leave a phone message. This was the first time we did not receive a response. Later we were told they did not provide an itemized list because the care was not completed before December 31. We could have claimed the tests and appointments that were completed and paid in that first year if each charge was itemized, but we were denied an opportunity to point this out. • This was not the only time our voice message was ignored. When we tried to submit our second round of tests and had a question, the doctor ignored our message until the lab started calling them requesting additional funds. Then I got a call from the secretary asking for more money, not to answer our question. After this, over email, I learned we were being ghosted because we were no longer patients. And that we had taken too long to complete the second round of testing so our initial investment was gone. There was no transparency up front that our money would disappear if we did not complete the testing by a certain date, and I still don’t know when we were terminated. The office staff called regularly and each time I requested more time. • If the program is unsuccessful for any reason, be aware that the doctor’s support will evaporate and turn into a blame-fest with an itemized emailed list (ironic I know) of how the failure is the patient’s fault. I was actually already aware that our child did not take all the supplements in the first six months, but the doctor’s inability to adjust expectations and timeline based on our daughter’s PANS diagnosis and then the blame game undermined all her credibility as a caring health provider. This is unfortunate because it’s a child who continues to suffer. • I do see potential in functional medicine, but be aware that with this provider is a financial gamble unless you pay one appointment at a time. I hope you have better luck. If you have plenty of cash and confidence in swallowing large pills, your odds would improve at least. Less

Hope is an important factor in living a meaningful life! Dr. Welch is a facilitator of that hope! I also know that if I need anything/have any problems, I can get an appointment without waiting weeks or long at all. I've been able to contact the office and get in quickly for emergency pain that had me in tears, and leave the office with a smile and laughing at the fact that I was just in tears due to the intensity of my pain . I'm so thankful that she made room for me as her client despite my financial circumstances or status. The office staff, Kourtney, is not only pleasant, but also quick to respond and very helpful and attentive. She is always on top of scheduling, returning phone calls or emails, and even just providing good customer service. When a doctor and the staff are on the same page, the experience is positive versus frustrating and defeating. Seeing Dr. Welch is not just an appointment that leaves you going home the same way you came. It's an experience of freedom from pain. She is a safe place for anyone's healing process. Having that safe place is equally important to the journey of eliminating pain. Doctors tend to be "matter of fact" and only have about 15-20 minutes to spend with patients but Dr. Welch takes the time to listen, discover, and then offer non invasive treatment. When I arrived, my picture was taken and liscense copied like a criminal with no explanation. Ask to sign vague language paperwork. I was NOT informed of the $250 consult price prior to appt either by phone when I made the appt, or when I arrived, and was only told after the consultation when a price sheet was pulled out and was told “$250 due today”, then was pressured to start and pay for rid... I was shocked. It is also not disclosed on the website that $250 is cost of consult. I caught on right way and did not like the way this office operated, paid my fee and left.
