My fiancée and I were in town for Grappling Industries and were bummed that we were missing our normal Sunday competition class. Right before we left, someone in the parking lot recommended The Academy Eden Prairie, and since it was only about 10 minutes from our Airbnb, we decided to check it out.I’m really glad we did. I’m a purple belt, my fiancée is a blue belt, and I’ve been training for about 12 years. I’ve visited a lot of gyms while traveling, and this was easily one of the best drop-in experiences I’ve ever had.The facility had everything I could imagine wanting in a gym, but the culture was what stood out the most. The vibes were immaculate. Everyone trained hard, but there was no hostility at all. There were also a lot of people there from other gyms, which I always take as a huge green flag. It shows that the gym not only has a lot of interest around it, but also supports a healthy cross-training environment. After class, I talked with Coach Morgan Frazer for a while, and he was extremely generous with his time. I had questions about how I could coach my own students more similarly to his style, especially since he has more experience with the CLA method, and he was very willing to talk through it with me.I really loved their approach to teaching beginners, but it was also clear that higher belts and competitors have a great room to grow in too. My fiancée and I will likely keep coming back to compete in the Twin Cities just because we enjoyed this class so much.
