I gave them another call. Turns out someone had just hit the lock button on the control panel (which I didn't even know existed), disabling the remotes. It's entirely possible someone in my house hit it accidentally when the door initially broke. Didn't matter... Miles came back out and couldn't have been nicer about what was probably a dumb user problem.I won't hesitate to call them for future work.Note that they prefer cash or check... they do accept credit cards but there is an extra surcharge, so if you want to avoid that, make sure you have cash or check on hand. Nutshell: Don’t use North Shore Garage Door. I bought a top of the line opener and they installed the garage door sensors improperly, then charged me to come out and install them properly, twice, but they still didn’t work properly. The last attempt to fix them was when they sent a technician who made some adjustments and then said the sensors were mounted incorrectly. He said the were supposed to be clipped on, not bolted and one of the bolts was cross threaded. He tried to charge me for the correct parts and the service call. I objected so he just charged me for the service call. A few weeks later the door would not close again. John in the office said the sensors are being bumped causing misalignment even though I insisted the sensors were aligned per the steady green light, and no one touched let alone bumped the sensors. John insisted the green light must be flashing and he suggested disabling the sensors so that the door would close even if something was in the way. I declined knowing the sensors are an important safety feature. He said they do it a lot when the sensors act up. If ever a customer is injured I’m sure their attorneys will appreciate this review.John said he’d send a technician out ONE MORE TIME but I’d be charged $49 for the visit. I said this sounds like a SCAM. You install the product incorrectly, then charge $49 to come and fix it when it doesn’t work, again and again. John then said he’d send out a technician one more time and not charge me “but if there is a problem, find another company to fix it.” We arranged a day & time but the technician never called and never showed up. I took John’s advice and found someone that came out the same day that I called. He made some quick adjustments, at the opener, not the sensors. He said the travel limits and the force settings were wrong. When he heard the story of what North Shore Garages was doing, he said, “I stand behind my work 100%. It only took me 5 min. and I was in the area anyway. No charge. Please call us when you need service or a new door.” I sure will. The opener has worked perfectly ever since. We contacted Northshore Garage Doors after our garage door would not go down. They arrived quickly and told us that we needed a new opener (aka, motor) and two new springs at a cost of $1500+. As an alternative, the technician suggested an all new door and motor, which seemed like a good deal at $3000. After reading the reviews, I decided to get a second opinion from MF Solutions, which is mentioned in another 1 star review for North Shore Garage Doors. MF Solutions diagnosed the issue correctly within 2 minutes--a dirty censor. The motor and the springs were fine. I then wrote a note to Northshore Garage Doors detailing these events.Here is an excerpt from the owner's reply: "We are a small family own business and operate with integrity. When we are at a customer’s garage, our experienced Technicians are to diagnose the problem and offer a competitive price. We are not here to mislead our customers...In our system we have his analysis and quote was New Opener $795 Rebalance the door, Garage Door Tune Up $195."It is noteworthy that the repairs mentioned by the owner left out the two springs, which doubled the estimate. Unfortunately this company is all about ripping customers and charge them arm a leg. I spend $1800 just to get the motor installed in my garage.Also they removed the old unit but never bothered to remove the old garage door sensors. I said to proceed with this however upon attempting to look closer at the springs he found there to be another issue and said replacement of the springs was not possible. He said the only option available would be to replace the door entirely which would be $1800 at minimum.This is a heavy bill so I told him I'd consider it and also get other estimates to verify that the entire garage door needed replacing. I was charged $39 for the service call for them to come out.Afterwards I called MF Solutions, Inc in Niles and they were able to come out the same day and fix the door by replacing the springs, cable and rollers for $475. My only concern is that he told me I needed a new garage door opener after replacing the spring. When he first arrived, I told him the door wouldn't open. He could have checked that initially by simply pressing the on/off button and then I would have a more complete analysis, up front. Otherwise it gives the impression of "oh, by the way, after I fixed the first problem and you paid me, then I happen to find another problem causing your garage door not to open." I'm sure that wasn't his intention but I suggest this as a learning moment: always determine up front if there are any other issues that the customer has besides the one you're fixing, so the customer knows up front what needs to be fixed, and the full estimate. In order to decrease the chances of wasting their time and mine, asked for a quote over the phone. Was told 99.00 per spring. When the guy gets here the cost 2 do both springs was 375.00. I was told I was likely quoted other types of springs, I specifically told the guy TORSION springs when I called, so that seemed kind of like bait and switch. With the amount of time to replace both springs (45 minutes) that is a very high labor rate. I have since been asking around in my area and my original assumption that I should have expected to pay around 200.00 installed for both torsion springs seems correct. The installer was nice and service was quick though. They do claim a 5 year warranty on the springs. (Even the cheapest springs 10,000 cycles should last 7 years with normal use though) Never had a spring last less then 7 years. So I am not sure how much value having a 5 year warranty brings the user. I would highly recommend you get at least 2 quotes before choosing this company if cost is a factor. I could not recommend them to friends given my experience. Less

Called to have a broken spring replaced (told that to the dispatcher over the phone prior to the technician arriving). Technician originally scheduled to arrive between 2pm and 4pm, dispatched called at 4:03PM to tell me they wouldn't arrive until 5:00PM, then called again at 5:15PM to tell me they were in traffic. Needless to say when the technician arrived at 5:45PM they couldn't replace the broken spring because they don't actually service Wayne Dalton products they replace them with other products (at least their counter balancing systems). That does meet their claims of their website but it would have been nice to know especially since I was an experienced homeowner with all the details about the problem. They could only solve my $90 parts (plus labor, so lets say $250-$300 all in) problem with a $520 total replacement solution to a new counterbalance system from a different brand. If you want to use this company make sure you get an upfront quote from them prior to their arrival, otherwise you will be out the $49 service fee just to tell you what you told them at 9AM. Highly dissatisfied, and honestly it takes quite a bit for that to happen. Less

I found this company on Yelp after I purchased Chamberlain garage door opener at Menards. Scheduling install was very easy except technician Freddy showed up 2 hours before scheduled time. When Freddy came back to do the install I should have realized that he is not up to par to do this job. His tools where constantly dropping on the floor. He bended trolley trying to manually open garage door. Then the fun began when he told me I had defective garage door opener because Up button was closing the door and Down button was opening the door. I figured that's strange and ask him to double check programming and install to which he told me it is common problem and it happens to him all the time. We called Chamberlain and after spending 30 minutes on the phone I decided to go purchase same garage door opener form local Lowes. And guess what happened Freddy tried that opener and told me same problem. That's where I called the owner of the company Will and explained to him that this is impossible 2 garage door openers cannot both be defective. Will told me Freddy is very experienced and has been with the company for 3 years after that I looked at the manual and saw that Freddy put belt incorrectly and that what was causing all the problems. I told Freddy to reverse the belt and miracle everything started working. After this Freddy finished his job and quickly left while forgetting to put cover on garage door opener. After this I called Will again and ask him to send experienced technician to check Freddy work since Freddy cannot be trusted to do any kind of repairs unsupervised. Bottom line I would never recommend using this company again. Less

Since my 65th birthday was next week, I told Don about my painful experiences with lifting a 40 year old heavy wood door during power outages and asked his opinion on replacing the door. Don described the new door and gave me a good price. Don and Raphael came back early the next morning to install the new door. Don was very meticulous to ensure a superb installation by reinforcing the stress points with extra screws and by checking perfect alignment of all door parts. Raphael and Don finished the installation by cutting up the old door panels and by moving all the old door parts to the curb for garbage pickup. North Shore Garage Doors is a great find and Don is a super professional. Less
