Breath and Beyond Myo

I have been concerned for years about problems with my jaw. It would often pop out, freeze up and sometimes become painful. I have tried a mouth guard and physical therapy, but these did nothing to resolve the underlying problem.I mentioned these issues to Karen, and she alerted me to the fact that I had a serious tongue tie and that I was using my neck muscles to open my jaw widely. Besides the jaw pain, other problems can be related to the tongue tie, including sleep apnea and Gastric Reflux, both of which I have. Since my recently born Grandson had to have his tongue tie cut because he could not nurse properly, a lightbulb went on in my head! I was bottle-fed as a baby and did not have speech issues, so my tongue tie was not diagnosed or treated. In hindsight, exercises given to me when I had braces as a teenager appear to have been for rudimentary tongue strengthening. I have a small mouth and my teeth are very crowded. While the jaw issues were paramount to me, I also had worries about food aspiration - I had watched my dad struggle with it in old age. At 65, I was already having issues. Karen recommended that I start Myofunctional therapy to strengthen and train my tongue in preparation for the surgery, and afterwards to ensure that I could make best use of my newly freed tongue.I took Karen’s advice and have been absolutely thrilled with the results! The surgery was an out-patient procedure, and I had an easy recovery. It was clear to me that the pre-surgery therapy was important to its success. My jaw now operates smoothly and without pain, I can swallow without aspiration and there have been other benefits that I did not anticipate. My eyes have always been mis-aligned, with one lower than the other. This was not particularly noticeable in everyday life but was very apparent in pictures. After healing from the surgery and completing the therapy, my eyes are noticeably better aligned! It is amazing to me what a difference this process has made in my life.
