I started EmpowerHER back in March this year, I wanted to try it to see if the gym would be a good fit for me. What I found was so much more than a gym. To start Iv learnt so much about my own body , iv grown in confidence (not just body confidence but speaking my mind) in the ‘listen but we don’t judge’ environment and Iv found a full community of women who are actually the epitome of ‘empowerment’, loving & supporting each other along the way, just normal nice girl energy. No judging or posing. I think to understand its impact you need to understand my own journey to joining. In May 2023 my then 3 year old daughter was diagnosed with autism, I was drowning. In between appointments , battling for an EHCP and just finding where we fit in the world as a family, (if you have a SEN kid you will understand the constant anxiety it can place on you - worrying about the future & other’s opinions of you). I just got lost, I lost myself , I lost my confidence & more importantly I lost the ability to care for myself. A photo was taken of me last year and every time I look at it, I just see the person I was, the anxiety & neglect, I hate that picture. So I decided I wanted to make a change, I booked the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge and decided to join the gym to help get fit for it. My coach Sophia gave me more than coaching, as a SEND mum she got it. She ‘bigged’ me up and made me see that tending to myself wasn’t selfish but was essential. She has also given me sound advice on our situation & is the perfect listener. But she is also understanding of challenges that can get in the way of making it to the gym and helps me adapt & overcome. With her support & the rest of the coaches I continued to turn up and make progress, I smashed my Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge and stayed at the gym, in fact I committed to more sessions as I could see & feel the difference it was making to me.This gym has become my haven, where I get time away to breathe, think & lift heavy instead of feeling it!
