I was excited to dine at Divan after it being highly recommended by several friends for my birthday dinner. However, I am so disappointed in the overall experience.Positives - beautiful space with a massive skylight, complimentary elderflower lemon drop upon being seated. The chargrilled oysters were an interesting take on chargrilled oysters so I can appreciate the creativity there. Music over the speakers was loud enough to be heard but not so loud we had to raise our voices to speak to each other.Negatives - my first cocktail (Kitty Cocktail) arrived from the bar with lipstick on the glass already, while they did remake my drink in a clean glass this was ultimately the start of an unsatisfactory experience. Everything about the meal was tasteless and lacked flavor. My dad and I ordered steaks that never saw a speck of salt or pepper, I'm not even sure I tasted butter. Cooking the steaks with the rosemary in the kitchen would've added more flavor than the show of torching the rosemary tableside. I fed the leftovers to my dog. My mother's salmon was actually cold and appeared that they only used the hand torch to lightly brown it. 6:30 is pretty early for dinner service yet, the popular brussel sprouts were unavailable although there were only three other tables seated. The whipped potatoes were soup. Nothing, I mean nothing, was seasoned. Chris did come and let us know he was removing the potatoes and salmon from our bill considering we didn't even touch them. The ceasar salad was four romaine leaves drizzled in dressing and completely covered in cheese. The chocolate cake dessert was nothing to write home about but thank you for the sparkler. I was really hoping to hear the live music but that was not available during our reservation either, if this is a feature of the restaurant it might be helpful to include a schedule so patrons can book accordingly. All the staff were indeed friendly, upcoming, and always presented a smile with us.Our host/server, Derrick(I think I spelled his name right), was one of the best hosts I've ever had. He checked on us from time to time and always made sure we were doing good, and if I had to say he definitely deserves a raise for how attentive and kind he was to 1) the birthday girl and 2) the rest of us. He even made accommodations for someone who had dietary restrictions, which was really helpful.Now, for the food, it all visually looked tremendous, especially the roasted chicken. Upon looking at the chicken, I already knew it was going to be full of flavor, but due to Lent, I couldn't bring myself to eat it. But with the testimonies of the other guests, they loved every bit of it. It was so good that what they couldn't finish, they took it to go, leaving no evidence behind lol. Even the steak looked phenomenal and had a nice pink center, so if you like your steak rare, this might be worth a try. For dessert, there was pie and chocolate cake and at this point I couldn't eat anymore but I tried the cake to end off on a sweet tooth and boy that chocolate was indeed rich. It had a nice taste of chocolate, but it wasn't too sweet that it would make me sick, definitely one of the better chocolate cakes I've had.To end this review off, it is indeed worth the 5 star rating. 2 of the guests from our party stated that they might do this again for their birthday, that's how good this spot was for us. Even the little things counted, such as the little mink blanket/scarf thing we were provided, were nice because the room we were in was indeed on the colder side because it was where some wine was being stored. These small accommodations definitely boost the rating to a 5, in my opinion. Who knows, I might come again for another birthday party, LOL! But even then, this is a nice spot if you for a business lunch or dinner.(Side note: I did take pictures of the food it somehow ended up being corrupted, and now they're useless. Also saw the happy hour menus and decided this was a great choice. We arrived on time for our reservation on the 15th of February. We were greeted politely by well dressed hostesses. Once we were seated, we were given a menu that featured Valentine's day, 3-course food items. We were puzzled and quite disturbed that they were not having happy hour and they only offered a menu for Valentine's day, even though it was advertised on the website black restaurant week. Restaurant was very over priced and we were told this menu was the ONLY OPTION to order from. The waiter was very rude and pushy. Moving forward, we traveled an hour to be here and we wanted to make the best of the nite, so we decided to stay 😒. I ordered a wedge salad, 8oz ribye steak and chocolate cake, ALL for $165 incl taxes. The salad was made for a toddler, very limited ingredients!! The steak was fatty and rubbery, medium cooked!! The chocolate cake was cold and tasted like it came from a box. We attempted to bring our concerns to the waiter but she was very nonchalant and continued to be dismissive. What was even more disturbing, we continued to ask about other food items but was forced to order from a limited menu featuring Valentine's day and later was told they were accidentally put on black restaurant week. Once seated, we waited another 30 minutes before our order was taken and another 30-40 minutes for our food to arrive. The restaurant has the potential for a great ambiance, but the service was terrible, and the food was underwhelming. Everyone in our party ordered ribeye steaks, which tasted like plain, unseasoned meat. The mac and cheese was no better--reminiscent of boxed Kraft. The whipped mashed potatoes, however, were surprisingly good. The waiter forgot to box the remainder of my steak and said that he thought I was done with it and trashed it- so, yet another loss. We skipped dessert since every request seemed to take at least 45 minutes. On the bright side, the drinks were excellent, especially their signature lemon drop with elderflower. My husband had the fried shrimp and pasta. His shrimp was overcooked so he sent it back & the pasta was like two spoonfulls…like a garnish or an afterthought which was disappointing. He didn’t want to order anything else due to the long wait time. I feel like for the price point & vibe that they need to work on some logistics so that everything is done in a timely manner. When you pay upscale prices, you expect reasonable wait times and food prepared to perfection. I appreciated that our waiter took a few things off the bill to accommodate the issues so he should definitely be promoted or given a raise for being superb. I think Divan underestimated what’d it take to prepare food for a packed house on NYE, so hire more cooks or work on the logistics. No guest should ever wait two hours to eat. Asked jokingly if the crab meat was authentic to decide if I wanted to add it and she rudely answered “well look around. This is not that kind of place. I don’t know where you go, but we don’t do that.” Although she rubbed me the wrong way, I ignored the comment to focus on the celebrant. Once again, we reminded the server of the occasion being her birthday. We ordered and she asked “is that all?” and then when we answered yes, she quickly left and said our drinks would be up soon. Fast forward, about 10 minutes later, we could tell a huge presence entered the restaurant and sat right at the table next to us with 2 others. All of a sudden, all of the staff, including Sandra Bullock, came out one by one to greet that guest and hug her, which let us know they all knew her. From here on out, the attention shifted from everyone to this specific table. They pulled out the works for that guest, breaking out this large pepper cracker and rushed out drinks and food for them. We didn’t even get offered complimentary bread, which we didn’t even know was an option until we saw how this table was being treated. Our server completely forgot about us and stayed at the table next to us making small talk and socializing with them. She Ignored us and was at that table next to us practically all evening. We tried to flag her down several times for services, ie for salt and pepper for the bland pasta, to order something else as we were not pleased, etc, and her attention was elsewhere. We finally caught her attention after several attempts and asked for a dessert menu, and I had to stop her from walking away so quickly after dropping it off, to remind her of my friends birthday again and if something can be done with the dessert. My friend also asked her who the lady next to us was and that’s when she shared she was the owner. Fast forward, dessert was brought out with no fanfare, no birthday pizazz or care in the world. They just plopped it on the table. Not only did Sandra Bullock not care, she placed the dessert on the bill AND charged a 20% “service fee” for not doing a THING. I had to inquire about the meaning of the service fee for her to share it was basically gratuity. Meaning she would have taken a tip TWICE for not doing a thing if I had not asked. My friend was so defeated and did not enjoy her birthday here at all. The ambiance itself is beautiful but if you are not the owner, or you go on a night when the owner shows up as a guest, you will be treated like chopped liver. Luckily we saw a cocktail place directly across the street called Dearly Beloved and decided to go in for some drinks. Dearly Beloved was phenomenal and picked up Divan’s slack. Dearly Beloved gave my friend a drink on the house and brought her a cake with a sparkler in it, even though their kitchen was closed! Neither placed on the bill. That is service and care. And their menu was actually reasonable and flavorful. I would suggest walk a few more steps and go there for a beautiful ambiance AND service. So disappointed in Divan. Less

They also have a small stage for live music at a pleasant volume. Customer service was great as well. The Not So Good: Despite the stellar customer service, the wait times for food were too long. I appreciate a kitchen that takes its time to curate dishes, which might explain the deliciousness, but the wait times need improvement. Other restaurants in the city manage to deliver equally delicious food in half the time, so it's possible. Perhaps the restaurant is short-staffed, but the quick arrival of drinks helped with the wait. We planned to order dessert, but after waiting maybe 10+ minutes for the waiter to return after asking us if we wanted dessert, we became a tad frustrated and decided to skip dessert. When we received the bill, there was an admin fee. This is a rising thing in Chicago apparently, and I understand it's used to offset rising costs. However, patrons shouldn't bear the responsibility for a restaurant's inefficiencies. If we hadn't waited so long for our waiter to take our dessert order, we would have spent another $20-$40 more, easily covering this admin fee. The restaurant needs to improve efficiency and resolve these issues. Don't burden patrons with extra fees; tip culture and food costs are already out of control. If you must include an admin fee, be more transparent about it when booking online like other restaurants in the city. Just FYI to Divan management - what the admin fee really does is deduct money away from the server's tips. My partner deducted it from the tip, and I know others have done this also which really isn’t fair to the server. In summary, the food is worth the wait, but ensure you're not starving before you go as it takes some time to receive your food. When I politely attempted to explain that he was not in the frame, the owner dismissed me without a second thought, displaying a shocking lack of manners and professionalism. While I understand that everyone has their moments, this encounter left a sour taste in my mouth and detracted from an otherwise stellar experience. As a patron, I expect to be treated with respect and courtesy, regardless of the circumstances. In conclusion, while I wholeheartedly recommend Divan for its exceptional food and service, I urge the management to address issues of customer interaction, particularly with regards to one of the owners. A little more empathy and understanding can go a long way in ensuring that every guest leaves with a positive impression. I really recommend the French onion soup with bone marrow, but be warned it's not a cup it's a big bowl. The beet (not Beef!) carpaccio is delicious! I was disappointed by the wedge so I wouldn't get that if you expect a traditional wedge salad. I would recommend getting a sauce with the steak.
