The Insomnia Clinic

Having had insomnia for 26 years (from when our daughter was born) I started this Insomnia Clinic programme in January 2025. I wasn’t expecting a quick fix and, like many, I really struggled for the first few weeks. I also suffer with anxiety which doesn’t help. The 6hr sleep window (it should really have been 5hrs but I couldn’t bear the thought!) seemed brutal at first but after a couple of months, I established a nightly routine that I came to enjoy - and still do! For the first 6 months or so, I was very strict about getting up at 6am (later on, I moved it out to 6.30am) and I came to enjoy my peaceful early mornings too.For me, the key has undoubtedly been my attitude to sleep - I’m less hung up about it now. That is such a simple statement to make but it was absolutely the hardest thing to achieve! If I don’t sleep well now, I know I can still get through the day (even at work) and that I will most likely sleep a bit better the following night. I still have weeks where my sleep is minimal (usually due to anxiety) but I’ve finally taught myself not to be angry about it. If I struggle to get off to sleep, I practise the mindfulness techniques Kathryn suggested (and have come to know and appreciate my pillowcases!) and it seems to work! So, in a nutshell, don’t give up! It can take time and a lot of trial and error - and it may not ever be perfect but it will be better. Thank you!
