It is great that students enjoy the classes offered by Mother Tree / Gateway, however it is important that students be able to make an informed decision. If you want the training, that's okay. But keep in mind this training is not superior to any other training. Babies have been born the same way since the beginning of people. Not much has changed. You don't need an expensive "birth guru" to teac... More

It is great that students enjoy the classes offered by Mother Tree / Gateway, however it is important that students be able to make an informed decision. If you want the training, that's okay. But keep in mind this training is not superior to any other training. Babies have been born the same way since the beginning of people. Not much has changed. You don't need an expensive "birth guru" to teach you. You don't need an overlord's approval to feel like you are worthy to be a doula. Students need to know that there are no job opportunities available once you finish training...I mean zero jobs. You will be self employed and on your own. You will be asked to volunteer. Even past your birth requirements for training, you will be expected to be on call 24/7 and do very hard work for free. Agencies will take most of your money. Contract work is rare. Hospitals will always take the free student doulas from gatekeeper organizations like Mother Tree / Gateway / PDX Doulas and will never create opportunities for paid work. Most THW doulas end up burning out or leaving the industry all together because they are constantly asked to work for free or go bankrupt and have to take other jobs. Organizations like this one are raking in cash with the steady supply of new students. Very few doulas actually make a livable wage. Most of the time there is no return on your investment in programs like this one. The birth industry is cut-throat in Oregon. It is not inclusive or supportive. People will talk behind your back, shame you, steal from you, and take advantage of you every chance they get. They are only nice to you until you catch on to the scheme and start asking questions. It is hard to have conversations about it with others because everyone is afraid to say anything negative about the gatekeepers. If you are disabled, queer, or different in any way expect to be discarded like trash. If are from another country and not already in the club, you will be told you are not a good fit. The entire Oregon Health Authority - Traditional Health Worker / Doula program is a scam...and these doula training organizations, the hospitals, and OHA are all in on it. "Doula" in Greek means female slave.. as a THW doula and as a Mother Tree / Gateway student/member, you will be treated like one. Think twice before paying money for this training and entering this industry. Less
