I hired Caldwell Exteriors to replace my roof due to hail damage. In hindsight, I regret engaging with this company. The positives: the salesman was very personable, communicative, and responsive. He worked hard to land this project, was timely in getting back to my with questions before the work started, and definitely appeared more invested than anyone else in the company in trying to resolve the issues and ensure I was satisfied with the work when I had issues. The team did a great job of protecting my landscape, outdoor furnishings, pool, and yard while they worked. The post-completion clean up was extensive and they left me with a very clean yard, drive, and street, and nails are always a concern, popping tires, after roofing work is done. The negatives: my house is a two-story, single family home, and had a wing added in the back of the house after the main home was built. The first floor is mostly attached brick veneer, and the second story had vinyl siding added over it close to 25 years ago. As a result of this addition, there was a small “dog-ear” portion of roofing from the original home at the corner intersection where the addition was added. For some reason, and the logic was never explained to me, the crew decided to completely remove this dog ear, which literally left a hole in my wall, with an attempt to patch it with some flashing. This wasn’t discussed beforehand, I didn’t agree to it, and when I confronted the project manager about it, he had no response.Additionally, and this was also never explained satisfactorily, the new level of shingles was higher, by about an inch, which may not sound like much, but that caused the shingles to be pushed right up against the drip edge of the siding, which will cause problems with proper runoff of water when it rains. And that drip edge was damaged. About a foot was now missing, and in another section, there was a chunk broken out of it.They sent someone out a few days later who worked on the roof. After he left, I went and looked at the work. The hole was still there, untouched. The siding was just shoved up and then nailed to the wall. If left this way, it would eventually cause warping and buckling of the siding as the seasons changed, ultimately ruining the siding.I pushed back again. They came out a third time and worked on both this time. They trimmed back the siding where it was touching the roof, but the finish out looks amateurish at best as they replaced the drip edge (J-channel) which doesn't match and looks terrible. The "dog ear" was rebuilt, but unsatisfactorily. Where I used to have proper siding and flashing, that looked professional, had been and would have continued to be maintenance free, I now have flashing and siding that is gooped up with roofing caulk and looks amateurish at best. This is no longer maintenance free. The caulking will have to be replaced periodically to keep rain out. I told the project manager as soon as I saw what they had completed, that it “looked like shit”. He said nothing in response. It’s a shame that two small areas of a larger roofing project were handled so poorly. They know roofing. They don’t know siding, or trim finishing. I won’t use them again.I’ve uploaded 4 photos. The before (what it used to look like in red, 2 photos of what they tried to leave me with, and the final “repair”.
