Ask Dr. Heather

After a year and a half of trying everything to resolve a chronic hamstring issue that kept me off the running trails and roads— including two rounds of physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, dry needling, and more—my triathlon coach, an elite runner himself, suggested I give Dr. Heather a shot. I texted Dr. H that morning and received a quick reply. We set up a consultation for that same evening, and Dr. H informed me that she could have me back to running in approximately three weeks. Needless to say, I was skeptical. Driven by desperation and hope, I reluctantly signed up for her program, and we began just a few days later. I commute from Texas to California for work during the week, so we scheduled our mid-week sessions for 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET, which worked well for both of us. Dr. H quickly discovered the root cause of my issue during our sessions: a disconnected posterior chain. We immediately went to work on this, and I started learning new techniques. My body responded positively to the new routine as I realized that the muscles just needed to be trained to respond to the new stimuli; they adapted more quickly than I had expected. Fast forward three weeks, and unbelievably, I was back on a treadmill and then hitting the roads with runs of up to 5 miles. Today, I have been working with Dr. H for about five months. I've chosen to continue on a maintenance program focusing on strength, balance, and other areas of weakness. I'm happy to say that I am now beginning to increase my mileage and have set a goal to compete in another Ironman this upcoming season, which I thought wouldn't be possible just five short months ago. If you are like me and feel like you've tried everything without finding a resolution, I encourage you to send that text today.
