I know that acupuncture can help relieve pain for some people. I had the opposite experience here. I went in to seek relief for chronic low back pain. Barbara put needles throughout my body, including my right hand. As soon as one of the needles went in, I started experiencing 10/10 pain. I was sobbing, couldn't breathe, couldn't even speak to tell her to take the needle out. She did not adjust the needle or take it out. Her only response was to tell me to breathe. Once I could speak, I asked her if that was a normal response. She said that everyone responds differently, but that means we found a blockage of energy. I went home and cancelled all my future appointments because I could not convince myself that 10/10 pain should ever be considered a normal part of treatment. 3 weeks after the appointment, I was still having shooting pain in my hand. I went to see a doctor who specialized in hands. He said the acupuncture caused damage to the dorsal sensory branch of the ulnar nerve. He said I was lucky, because had it been the radial nerve, some people take over a year or longer to recover from a similar injury. He gave me therapy to do on my hand which has since improved the pain. Just wanted to warn other people that nerve damage is a potential side effect that I would not wish on anyone.
