I just returned from a 4-day 2.0 camp run by Kevin McKinnon, held in Renfrew, Canada, roughly an hour west of Ottawa, with my eleven-year-old son. This was my son’s first on-ice experience with Kevin and, other than seeing him on 2.0 videos, we didn’t really know what to expect. We have been involved with the 2.0 program for 8 months and had a basic understanding of the mechanics they teach. Our trip to Renfrew had its challenges: our flight was delayed by 6 hours and then canceled due to weather, so we rented a car at the airport and drove for 7.5 hours. We arrived at 2:30 a.m., and my son was on the ice that morning from 10:30 to 12:30 pm with a 10-minute break for an ice cut each day. My son and I made a huge commitment to get to Renfrew, and boy, was it worth it! Kevin was humble and approachable, but what really struck me was the fluidity of his skating mechanics; the speed he can generate with so little effort is incredible. You can tell immediately that he has mastered these 2.0 mechanics: the players can’t take their eyes off him; he is in absolute control of that rink; and the kids respond. Every day, it was a high-intensity, fun environment for the players, and Kevin’s ability to articulate and demonstrate these mechanics was something I’ve never seen before. Every moment on that ice for two hours a day, tremendous amounts of mechanics were being shared; it was priceless. We also booked Kevin for 1-hour private lessons while we were there, which I highly recommend. He walks through all the mechanics and uses video to show and correct while on the ice.If you are serious about improving your hockey mechanics, or looking to give your child a leg up, Kevin is a must.We are currently planning our return visit in 3 months…Tom Murray
