A great experience deserves a detailed and informative review.ASAP Pro Handyman, owned by Esteban Rivera, was referred by someone in the Berkeley Parents Network. We needed him to cut, paint, and install four solid wood doors and non-standard (not mass produced) door knobs. Based on my experience working with these doors, and from estimates by others, I knew it would be a difficult project. When we told him about the job, he didn't hesitate. "Yup. I can do it—no problem." That became a frequent phrase any time I requested something. And every time, he would deliver. That said, there were challenges.First, it's worth mentioning how thorough the estimate was. It had a summary of what we were requesting, including "scope of work" and "out of scope work."Communication is the biggest thing with these things, and he really showed up in that regard. Communication via email and on-site was clear, fast, and frequent. He's fluent in English and Spanish. My wife spoke to him in English, I communicated in Spanish. The challenge he overcame was that we had a rotten door frame and hardware too weak for solid wood doors. He suggested multiple solutions for all of this, including cutting new wood to replace the damaged section. Due to time, decided it would be better to buy longer and stronger screws to secure the doors. The biggest challenge for everyone was the timeline. I don't think anyone realized how many days it would take to "learn" this specific job. It was not stated how many days it would take, and I didn't really ask. I thought it would be one day. It took three days.Things that ate up time were waiting for paint to dry and going to Home Depot to get the right hardware. That said, he covered those costs, which I think was generous. It wasn't his fault that the hardware wasn't strong enough. This job took so much time that it also affected the thoroughness of the work. Don't get me wrong, they were very thorough. But, by choice, I compromised on the last 5% of the job:1) When you move a doorknob up/down, the frame has a hole where the old one was. I told him not to worry about patching it because I really wanted the main job completed.2) At the final walkthrough, we didn't notice there were a few screws missing from the door hinges. For both 1 and 2, I will be doing them myself. But I know if we ask him to, he would come back and work that task at no additional cost. If we had finished the previous tasks earlier, I would have requested he complete that last 5%.Obviously, if I'm writing this much, I'm enthusiastic about my experience. I don't write reviews often. Only for those who give great experiences.I will happily call Esteban back for another project. In fact, I look forward to it.
