Deckers Pondscapes

The pond built for us by Deckerโs was more expensive than attempting it myself with a pick, a shovel, and a DIY kit, as I had threatened my husband I would do, but it is also way beyond anything that could ever be achieved as a DIY project, even if one owned their own heavy equipment and an artistic eye. Alan and his team had the design expertise, the equipment, the supply sources, and the experience to help us create something magical in our own backyard. Even my husband agrees that hiring Deckerโs was worth every penny.
Alan and his team were friendly, professional, and very skilled as they labored in early Novemberโeven with light snow falling on their headsโ to fulfill Alanโs promise to get the project done that year despite COVID supply chain interruptions that unavoidably delayed the project. They were careful not to disturb any more of the existing landscaping than absolutely necessary and did an exceptional job of cleaning up before they left just twelve days after Alan spray painted the basic outline of the pond, bog, and skim cove on the ground. Our boring backyard had been transformed.
The result, after the pond plants had a season to mature and get established, is a beautiful focal point for my gardening efforts that we love and interact with daily. Our pond and the surrounding landscaping give our home the wow factor it lacked, provide a healthy habitat for the koi I always wanted, attract a variety of wildlife, and give us a safe and easily supervised place for our grandkids to swim on a hot day. Yes, with the koi happily swimming around them and begging for treats. Having a pond has also expanded my gardening to include aquatic plants, a whole new aspect of my hobby to enjoy.
Our pond has provided a breathtaking backdrop for a bridal shower, two family weddings, and many a family birthday party or casual gathering since it was built in 2021.
Yes, we would recommend Deckerโs to anyone interested in creating the pond or water feature of their dreams. Just do your research and be sure you understand the costs involved not only for the initial construction, but also for routine upkeep. The cost of beneficial bacteria is negligible compared to maintaining a swimming pool, but I dramatically underestimated the cost of the electricity to run a pump all pond season and an aerator and de-iced all winter for our 10,000 gallon pond. Those first electric bills weee a shock!๐ Also, my husband and I are older and we are not really up to doing the pond opening and closing tasks in spring and fall ourselves, so the cost of hiring Deckerโs to do it, while worth every penny, needs to be considered as well. My advice to potential pond owners is to analyze your budget and research the costs. Then, if you think you want a swimming pool insteadโ reconsider! Building our pond cost LESS than an equivalent sized swimming pool (I checked), and I wouldnโt trade our pond full of fish, frogs, occasional turtle visitors, beautiful plants and happy grandchildren for a sterile, boring swimming pool for all the money in the world. We enjoy it all year round, whether we are swimming in it or not. Pond life is the best!
