This "Red Beard" guy knocked on my door on September 8th, 2023. This was 3 days after the area got hit badly with straight line winds. I had over a dozen large trees come down, two of them on my shed. I was waiting to have anything done until after the insurance adjuster came, documented everything necessary to satisfy the insurance company, then let me know what they will and will not cover. When I answered the door, this guy immediately starts into a pitch making me feel like he's a used car salesman. Obvious quick-talking deal maker. As he's going through his pitch, he says he'll take pictures for me (I already have pictures, duh), and will deal with the insurance directly, never coming after me for payment. Pretty suspicious claim. He says things like "I don't know how long the crane will be around" and other B.S. to give a false sense of urgency. He also tells me what my insurance will and will not cover (as if he knows what my policy states) and talks to me about how to clear other trees out by skirting some OSHA regulations, as if I'm more than willing to allow him to break federal law on my property for some perceived benefit to me. When he's all done with his pitch, he hands me a card, says to text him, and that he'll send me a link to the contract so he can get started. Little did this guy know, I was in the US Army JAG Corps. Yeah, let's see the contract. Right off the get-go, I see exactly what I'm looking for, the part right up top..."Payment." The very first sentence states, verbatim, "By signing this Agreement, you agree, acknowledge, and understand that this is a binding contract and that you are responsible for prompt payment for Work performed, regardless of whether such Work, or any portion of it, is covered by insurance." That seems to be in direct conflict with his verbal claim of working with insurance and not wanting me to pay a penny. He wants me to pay all the pennies no matter what insurance does. Mind you, this business is located in Grand Marais, which is over 3 hours away from my home. That means he packed up his equipment and crew to come provide services in the area. He wants to take away business from the local, hard-working, established lumber workers in the area to line his own pockets. I believe the term in the old days for this would be a carpetbagger. If it weren't for the slimy sales pitch, I could have forgiven this as trying to help the community after a natural disaster, no matter how localized it was. That wasn't the case though. He brought his business here, like vultures after a death, to prey upon this community and hoped that my neighbors weren't savvy enough to actually read the contract after his fraudulent verbal claims. This business's actions are predatory and deceitful. Even worse, they're dishonest, dishonorable, and lacking integrity...the polar opposite of what servicemembers stand for. Less
