I never worked out before…ok, phys ed class in junior college was likely the last time i did with any regularity and i was awful. Yeah, i had tried gym memberships a couple times before, but i had no clue what i was doing, what i should be doing or how!
June 2021 my wife says she wants to join a gym “ok, i’m in” I had no idea what i was getting myself into.
During the first “interview” with Coach Chris he asked “what’s been keeping you from reaching your fitness goals?” “not having any?”
“Really? Then why do this, why join our gym?”
“Well (my wife) wanted to join and i’ve done way stupider stuff for girls i didn't love nearly as much.”
At first it was impossible, the workouts were so hard, but the coaches would offer scaled versions to accommodate my ability. For days i would walk down stairs like a broken robot. The humbling experience of learning how to jump rope for the first time since elementary school…
3 mornings a week, 1hr ea… warm up, workout of the day, post workout stretch…
after a couple months i started going 5 mornings a week @ 515am and it was TRANSFORMATIVE!

The Expertise - this is important, likely the most important and everything else stems from this.
Steph and Chris bring top flight expertise to the style of coaching, the equipment supplied and the physical amenities of the gym.
The Community - no doubt, members are putting it all out on the floor each day and being able to commiserate with your fellow sufferers is almost as rewarding as collectively celebrating our gym mates achievements. There is a welcoming kindness pervasive throughout this gym. Are all CrossFit gyms like that? I don't know, i just know that this place is. We are of various ages, abilities, experience and backgrounds and we regularly engage in debates about cheesecakes and why mint is delicious or just for toothpaste…
The Workout - follow the program, let them break you down in order to build back up. From training on form that flows into performance that flows into results. The exercises are balanced between range of motion, form training, strength training, cardio…again all done on/with equipment that is in great shape, with amazing guidance.
The Coaches - this is where it truly comes together. Why does the CrossFit model work? Because you have 12 people sharing one coach. They approach each LIV athlete at their ability level, know what our goals are and when/how to push us for that next rep, that heavier load, more difficult progression. And they are all DELIGHTFUL! Each brings a different flavor to their classes and as a LIV athlete switching up class schedule to train with all the Coaches offers new perspectives to learn from.
So, yeah, I’m not quite 50 and because of LIV’s expertise, community, program and Coaches, I want to go train every day of the week, I want to get better at rowing, running, lifting, I want to see my gym mates and cheer on their accomplishments. And i get to share this journey with my favorite person. Between work schedules, kids, etc…my wife and i didn't have something we were working on together…when she sent me a video of a rope climb day @ the gym…the smile on her face made me swoon all over again.
So, yeah, my Life is in the best “Shape” its ever been and i haven't even really written about the physical parts of the transformation.
