MVMT Rx Sports Care & Chiropractic
I am 62 yo and have lived a fit, active life. I’ve been a long-distance road cyclist, an avid skier, always down for backpacking & hiking & camping off-grid. About 16 months ago, I started weight training as my newest sport of choice. I don’t remember when it started, but I began experiencing significant popping in my knees, with discomfort and some pain in my left knee. Rather than address the issue, I chose to avoid any activities that would cause me discomfort or pain. It got to the point that I could not perform a lunge or walk up/down stairs. When I encountered a staircase, I could only go up/down one step at a time, holding on to the railing and side-stepping my way, in pain the entire time. I completely avoided hiking. I also had mentally cemented an association between knee popping and pain, which made me avoid even more activities. This is when I thought to myself, “Okay, either this is how it ends, and I will continue to spiral down, or I need to get professional help for this knee situation.” I’ll say it here and again at the end of my story: you have options. If you’re experiencing pain regardless of your age, you owe it to yourself to schedule a visit with the MVMT Rx team, at least for a consultation, if not a full rehab program. Make the call. You won’t be disappointed.I made the decision to call my long-time friend, Dr. Kyle Hemsley at MVMT Rx. I was keenly aware of Kyle’s background, knowledge, and education, and knew that I would be able to trust his opinion. I was sure that I didn’t want knee replacement surgery and was certain there was another option. I scheduled an appointment for a consultation, where Kyle put me through a battery of strength tests. The analysis of the tests indicated I had significant weakness in my quads that was exacerbated by my avoidance of activities that had been resulting in discomfort and pain in my knee. We settled on a 12-week rehab plan to build strength not just in my quads but all the supporting connective tissue around the knees. In that first appointment, Kyle stated that not only would I be lunging and running up/down stairs, but I would be jumping and squatting heavy again. I responded with a few expletives and disbelief, but still trusted Kyle and the plan. Each week in the program, we have progressively added more work for the legs and knees. I’ve still had some knee popping going on and at times discomfort, but much less or even no pain. I am seeing and living the positive change. First, I started hopping across the gym (think pogo stick type hopping), specifically with the intent to hop higher. Next, I started doing low box jumps. We also started doing light barbell box squats at this point. All of this was to introduce the knees to more and more work. Fast forward to this week: I jumped over low hurdles (series of 3) with zero discomfort and zero pain. I was able to perform a below parallel box squat with 165 lbs on the bar again with zero pain. I am able to walk up and down stairs normally now, without holding onto a railing and without side-stepping, with zero pain.Needless to say, my confidence is through the roof, and I am looking forward to building even stronger legs and more resilient knees. I am back to living a healthy life, and normal day-to-day activities do not bother my knees in the slightest. You have options.
